RDA Study Materials – Restorative and Esthetic Dentistry

Approximately 50% of the RDA exam is on Restorative and Esthetic Dentistry.  This course walks you through the key technical concepts you’ll need to understand for exam success.  Many of these concepts may be new—even for those with years of dental experience—so take your time and enjoy expanding your knowledge of restorative and esthetic dentistry.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

• Identify the properties, indications, and manipulation requirements of common restorative materials, including amalgam, composite resin, glass ionomer, temporary restorative materials, liners, and bases.

• Demonstrate understanding of cavity classifications (Class I–VI) and how these classifications relate to tooth anatomy, preparation design, instrument selection, and restorative procedures.

• Describe the instruments, accessories, and armamentarium used in restorative and esthetic procedures, including matrix systems, wedges, hand instruments, rotary instruments, finishing/polishing systems, and isolation devices.

• Explain the principles of esthetic dentistry, including tooth shade selection, bonding principles, curing requirements, finishing and polishing techniques, and factors affecting esthetic outcomes.

• Recognize procedural steps, sequencing, and safety considerations in assisting with restorative dental procedures, including moisture control, field isolation, infection control, and proper setup/breakdown of restorative trays.
