COURSE DESCRIPTION

This continuing education course introduces dental assistants to the essential concepts behind the oral-systemic connection and how gum health can influence overall wellness. Participants will learn the basics of the oral microbiome, periodontal disease, and the evidence-supported links between oral inflammation and systemic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, pregnancy complications, respiratory illness, and cognitive decline. The course provides simple, approachable explanations and practical examples that help dental assistants feel more confident discussing oral health with patients and supporting early detection within the dental team. This course offers a clear, foundational understanding of whole-body health in dentistry presented in a way that is engaging, accessible, and easy to apply in everyday practice.

Plan for roughly two hours to complete this course and receive 2 CEUs!

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the oral-systemic connection and how oral bacteria and inflammation influence overall health
  • Identify key systemic conditions (such as heart disease, diabetes, pregnancy complications, respiratory illness, and Alzheimer’s disease) that are linked to periodontal disease.
  • Recognize signs of oral inflammation and understand the dental assistant’s role in early detection and prevention.
  • Communicate the oral-systemic link to patients using plain language, empathy, and motivational interviewing techniques.
  • Apply practical strategies in the operatory to reinforce home care, support the dental team, and contribute to improved patient outcomes.

Upon completion, you will be issued a Continuing Education Certificate to verify your successful mastery of the course material.
